Funding Equipment

April 02, 2014 by Lori Potts, PT

A caregiver smiles as she leans over helping a young girl with her special needs equipmentFinding funding for adaptive equipment that you know will vastly enrich and enhance your child or client’s life can be a challenge at times. We have tried to do something about this.

This resource page has been compiled to direct you to a few funding options. Links to three online guides provide information to families and clinicians to increase knowledge about adaptive equipment and assistive technology, and the funding sources committed to meeting equipment needs. These guides outline basic information on funding sources, including federal and state legislation as well as health plans, and how to best access them. These guides are easily understandable to both parents and clinicians, and provide helpful tips for navigating the equipment funding process successfully.

Additionally, this resource page has an extensive list of funds, foundations, and local and national organizations dedicated to providing financial assistance to families. These can be a lifesaver when attempts to access other funding avenues for adaptive equipment have failed.

By providing these resources, we encourage families, clinicians, and caregivers to be persistent, to become knowledgeable about your child’s or client’s rights, and when necessary, to pursue the help you need through advocacy. If you know of other online resources that belong on this list, please send them to me.
