Kenyatta Jackson: A Gait Trainer Success Story

October 04, 2011 by Erna Albertz

Three year old girl is learning how to walk with a Rifton gait trainer in a classroom settingOn a gray, rainy Wednesday last week my day was brightened by the heartwarming story of a beautiful little girl named Kenyatta Jackson who is making great strides at her elementary school. I must have oohed and aahed as I watched a clip of Kenyatta taking her first steps in her Pacer gait trainer, because soon the whole office was clustered around me, just as thrilled as I was. I’d like to share it with you too.

Watch it here: Kenyatta and her gait trainer

Go Kenyatta!

This is a very touching story to hear about Kenyatta’s first steps of walking. Although it may be slow but I am sure Kenyatta will pick up and walk. I feel very happy for her and her family. This kind of transformation from crawling to walking gives confindence to the child and may enhance her performance in school. The trainer is commended for the good work.

The equipment being used is modern and sophiscated and not readily available in Less Developed Countries were thousands of children with disabilities who are unable to walk do not have a chance to walk in their life time.

Our daughter who has Cerebral Palsy is now 22 years old and she is unable to walk. We do not have modern equipment, however, we improvise and sometimes she takes a few steps in confines of our home. We set targets. We celebrate any achievements she makes. Our daugher is on a journey to walking and one day she will walk.
