As clinicians you know without a doubt that children with disabilities who are given the opportunity to stand and bear weight experience positive health benefits. Peer-reviewed literature supports active weight-bearing and dynamic loading for improved bone mineral content and an upright position improves cardiopulmonary functioning, bowel and bladder health and joint range of motion.
Unfortunately, too many state Medicaid reviewers haven’t recognized these benefits. We are seeing too many states denying reimbursement for standers, claiming there is no medical necessity or health benefits. For this reason, the National Coalition for Assistive and Rehab Technology (NCART) has put together a timely Standing Device Funding Guide.
This Funding Guide steers clinicians and suppliers through a comprehensive patient evaluation, adaptive stander selection, and documentation of the findings for ensuring medical necessity. Included in the Standing Device Funding Guide is an Evaluation Worksheet for thorough and organized documentation of the findings. The Evaluation Worksheet does NOT take the place of a letter of medical necessity, but is useful in considering all the perspectives of the patient and the standing device when writing the letter of medical necessity.
